PORTFOLIOCorin Ileto is a Filipina-Australian composer, producer and performer merging traditional forms with hyper-digital sounds to create new imaginary realms. Tristan Jalleh is a Malaysian/Australian Multimedia Artist and Director creating large scale projections of immersive digital environments. Together they have created numerous video works and live audiovisual music performances that have been presented internationally.
LUX AETERNA MUSIC VIDEO (2023)
Corin Ileto performs a celestial soundtrack in a hybrid virtual world created by Tristan Jalleh that combines baroque, anime and sci-fi film aesthetics. Inspired by the ‘hydraulis’ (ancient water organ) Ileto is interested in the idea of musical instruments as spirits and sacred objects. Transcending the boundaries between physical and virtual, the instrument merges CGI animations by Jalleh with a keyboard prop that Ileto built from the remnants of an abandoned piano.
Premiered July 2023 on FACT and later was exhibited at NOVA Rio Biennial | FILE Festival (Rio Di Janeiro, 2023), 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (Sydney, 2024), Science Gallery / University of Melbourne (Melbourne, 2024), C-Lab (Taipei, 2024).

45 minute Live AV show for Corin’s full length LP ‘Lux Aeterna’ (UIQ, 2023) presented with accompanying visuals by Tristan Jalleh. The show premiered in 2023 at Soft Centre | VIVID (Sydney) and Unsound Festival | Illuminate (Adelaide). Later that year the show toured across Europe and was presented at multiple major festivals including Work on Sunday (Santiago de Compostela), Berlin Atonal (Berlin), L.E.V. Matadero (Madrid), Robot Festival (Bologna) and Uncloud Festival (Utrecht).

ANG IDOL KO
(2022)
Collaborative project with collective Club Ate (Justin Shoulder and Bhenji Ra). Ang Idol Ko / You are My Idol (2022) is a new video installation by Club Ate that evokes ‘queer, trans and animist idols for today’. Featuring scenes with members of the collective, it continues Club Ate’s role in bringing community together for feasts, balls, and coming-of-age ceremonies. Blending ancestral figures called anitos from the Buwaya (crocodile) and Kinnari (bird) mythologies, the installation also draws on historical accounts of the Babaylan; queer and trans shamans in the Philippines who act as intermediaries between visible and invisible worlds. In some accounts, the Babaylan were decapitated and fed to the Buwaya. Club Ate reimagines these horrifying acts as ‘future folklore’ where Ra becomes a new idol, emerging ‘out of the belly of the Buwaya, her body recombined, empowered and attuned to the ancient beast’.

MNEMORY PALACE (2019)
Set of three video works exhibited at Mars Gallery (Melbourne), 'Spring 1883' (Sydney), and The Vincom Centre For Contemporary Art (Hanoi, Vietnam). In Mnemory Palace, Tristan Jalleh creates immersive digital environments that situate everyday objects within the abstract, using a process of combining his own photographs with hundreds of images resourced online to construct virtual installations that merge architectural, cinema and video game aesthetics into hyper-realities.
Jalleh subverts popular images and looks at intersections of cultural trends through a deconstructive perspective. Separating popular aesthetic elements from their context and recombining them with culturally adjacent themes in a virtual space create new visual harmonies and divergences, created in a digital playground of ‘cultural debris’. Which is not unlike how disparate advertising billboards thoughtlessly erected alongside each other can form unexpectedly poetic narratives.
For the soundtrack, Ileto takes a cue from Jalleh’s hyper-real hybridized aesthetic, creating a textural soundscape that merges industrial sounds from the material world with organic sounds from nature; punctuated by an uncanny cacophony of liturgical vocal recitations that are not quite fully human nor synthetic.

MANIFEST (2019)
Set of visuals created for Corin’s album ‘Manifest’ released on Bedouin Records (2019), including music videos for ‘Exo’ and ‘Maria’s Dream’and a 40 minute set of visuals created for Corin’s live performance rendition of the album.
'Manifest' is inspired by the synthetic sounds and theoretical notions found in modern iterations of the club, re-framed to fit within a hyper-real zone that encompasses late-romantic opera and orchestral music (the album contains recordings from late 18th century church organs). There is also an impetus to examine a physical interaction with the mechanical through the tightly configured and all-consuming visual/musical aesthetics.
In the accompanying visual show, Tristan Jalleh reinforces and re-frames these themes through motion graphics. Inspired by the fantastical cinematography of Tarsem Singh, and the Utopian futures of adventure game ‘Mirror’s Edge’. This immersive ”walk-through" places the audience within multiple virtual worlds where brutalist baroque-like mechanized architecture and glassy hyper-tech neo-modern cityscapes are interconnected by pulsating industrial tunnels. The landscape becomes a body with patterns refracting from geometric superstructures.
The audience inhabits the space like a video game in first person mode, moving through labyrinths and gliding down imaginary surfaces into a virtually landlocked mind maze. It's a dream-like narrative with one universe merging into another.

VIRTUALITY (2016)
Set of visuals created for Corin’s EP ‘Virtuality’ released on Wondercore Island (2016). The music video for ‘Vexations’ delves into the potential to merge human movement with the material environment. Tristan uses motion capture data from Corin’s performance to manipulate and control the movements of a building.
“I was interested in exploring ways in which we could translate my live performance to a virtual platform. Through my live performances I’ve adopted the synthesiser as my dominant voice where I perform all of the lead, bass and sequenced material from my recordings. I didn’t necessarily want to be visibly seen as a central figure in the video so I liked this idea of appearing as an apparition, embodied in the decaying infrastructure”.

“With instrumental music, you can break down a video concept into simply music and motion. Corin and I had already established a collaborative dystopian/cyberpunk/cyborg aesthetic with the previous music videos and had thought of adding a motion-controlled avatar that could perform in these environments.
VR is great for playing superheroes, but what if you wanted to be a building, a tree, or a storm? Fantasy violence is fun, but it won’t expand human consciousness.
We set up a DIY motion capture studio using coloured tape as tracking markers on Corin’s body and shot her performance using a NEXUS 10 tablet. In virtual reality you can express yourself in many forms, the fun is watching a large-scale object move in unusual ways, abstractly relaying the rhythm of Corin’s performance”

EX NILALANG : FROM CREATURE ~ FROM CREATION (2017)
Collaborative project with collective Club Ate (Justin Shoulder and Bhenji Ra). Ex Nilalang is a body of work that uses myth as a form to explore the intersections of queer identities of the Filipino diaspora. The artists employ video as a means of telling collaborative stories – visualized as four moving portraits. Nilalang has a hybrid meaning ‘to create’ and also meaning ‘creature : the work being both a transformation of existing mythologies and also the imagining of future folklore.
Co-commissioned by ACMI Melbourne for Asia TOPA and Blacktown Arts Centre for Balik Bayan 2017.
